Hi there I was not sure where to go with my questions and came across here, so " anything goes ":). I was just trying to do some research on the internet about why my Maltese X nails might be falling off and I keep coming across auto immune, so I'm pretty concerned right now and would love any feed back you may be able to give me.
Thank you
Taz

Hi Taz and welcome to Cimda.

You will find lots of info on here and although i don't have the answers for you myself other members will come along and give you some help.

It certainly sounds like an auto immune problem as i have read other stories regarding nails coming off.

I hope you get some answers soon.

Annee :)

Hi Taz,
welcome to CIMDA.
have a look at this article
http://cimda.co.uk/smf/index.php/topic,22.0.html
that should answer some of your questions.
I'm sure other people will be along soon to give you more advice.  I know that Evening Primrose oil can be really good for dogs with SLO.

My dog Lola has also had SLO. Treatment depends on the severity of the nail loss. For my dog (she has had many other kinds of immune disorders) we had to have one nail removed. We did not do other things besides upping the wild salmon oil. The other nails involved were not so much affected and stayed on but were broken or lifting. She went through three rounds of losing that nail. The one on the other foot, which is the symetrical one, is always short and broken, even today when it has been years since she actually had SLO. Of all the immune disorders I am familiar with, SLO may be the one which has the most variables concerning the severity, how the dog reacts, how the dog recovers, and the treatment required. There is also a yahoo group called SLOdogs which was very helpful to me.

Thank you all so much for your quick reply unfortunately Tiko passed away last night I woke this morning and he was gone :( I was to late and listened to my vet tell me not to worry about it. I just hope that people start getting other opinions if it shouldn't happen to you then it shouldn't happen to them. :( also I saw a post on here about canine lupus here is a link I found I hope it help :}

Oh no Taz, I'm so sorry.  Did he seem very poorly yesterday? Dogs don't usually die from SLO.  I'm so sorry.

I'm very sorry to hear you lost Tiko. I agree with Penel...dogs don't die from SLO. Maybe there was a complication? Or maybe he had another immune disease as well as SLO.
