oh Jan I am so sorry to come in & read that YO YO has had this set back so early post- surgery;does sound very like an aspiration pneumonia so  here is hoping that the IV & ABS will rapidly assist in his  recovery;sounds more like this to be the problem than  his addisons. At least  your vet has picked it up quickly. I wonder if the problem was there  BEFORE surgery  as this is not uncommon in any dog  with LP, My dog Max had a very bad attack of  AP ,this BEFORE he received tie   back some year later. CAMBS said then that  they did not operate when AP was already present.  he was on ABS for weeks.

The Newfie Club webb  site gives a lot of helpful info on LP & post- surgery care if you  need any  more advice. It cannot be easy  for you with your disability.
Lots of "WHITE LIGHT" coming down line for your boy.
Best wishes
Sylvia

Spoke to Graham the vet about 5 pm  YoYo is still running a temperature and doesn't want to eat.  However, this is sadly quite a common complication after tieback surgery so it's not altogether unexpected.  They've given him a painkiller and a drug to stop him retching as that is probably how he has aspirated.  If he isn't doing better by tomorrow, they will add in another antibiotic.  Meanwhile, they are keeping him on IV fluids as he was dehydrated this morning.

Thanks for asking.  I'll post again tomorrow when I've spoken to the vet again.

Hi Sylvia,

I am very disappointed that he has had this setback but I understand that it happens quite a lot - as you say both before and after surgery.  I'm not sure if there was a problem before surgery but i know the vet had listened to his chest before the op. He had also been on antibiotics since the scope and dental so I don't think there was a problem before.  Now he can hear crackles in one lung which wasn't there before.  I think the problem is that he has been retching quite a lot and that is probably the cause.  They are giving him Serenia to help the nausea and Vetagesic for pain.

I'm just so lucky I have a vet who will do things like come out to collect him this morning.  I had to drape YoYo across my lap in my wheelchair and then transfer us both to my stairlift - no idea where I got the strength to do that!  Amazing what you can do when its an emergency isn't it?

Thanks for asking Jo.  I've just posted on how he is doing so won't bore everyone by going through it all again.  I really appreciate everyone's support.  Hoping that when I phone in the morning he will have improved a little.

From my experience  & what i have learned from vets who are specialised in performing this type of surgery Jan , it is NOT that common for  them to have such set backs immediately post surgery but with YO YOU  he does have other health issues; most Afghans  that i  know about from   when I was the  breed health co-ordinator did very well, also including my own experiences   so we will   be keeping everything  crossed for YO YO responding to treatment.

I do know of one little girlie, quite oldish who had her tie back at the RVC, she  was  poorly & had to be re-admitted to their intensive care unit but   she did ok eventually , it is just  a wait & see game   really once they are on appropriate treatment.

YO YO & you are in my thoughts & prayers

I am sure Jan will come here at some point, but I am afraid to tell you all some very sad news. Jan lost her beloved boy, YoYo this morning. He passed away in his sleep.

Jan is understandably devastated. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Oh Jan, I am so, so sorry.

But how wonderful that Yo Yo had such a loving and caring owner.

I am sure that lovely Yo Yo is at peace and please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so, so sorry.  Please give my love to Jan.  YoYo has been a CIMDA dog fo so many years he was part of the family.  It is so sad when they are no longer with us.  Rest in peace Yoyo!

Please tell Jan we are thinking of her and YoYo.

Thanks for the messages.  I'm finding it very hard to come to terms what has happened. It's been such a shock and wasn't expected.

When the vet did bloods on Sunday, he found YoYo had raised liver enzymes.  It is likely that this caused the vomiting which then cause the aspiration pneumonia.  Even Sunday evening,  the vet was confident that he would survive but on Monday morning, he just passed away in his sleep.

The tieback surgery appeared to have gone really well but he just didn't have the fight to get through this.  I still can't believe it.
