Hi,

Has anyone put their dog on a liver cleanse diet due to sludge in gallbladder?  Paco is also on milk thistle, however, I am not sure of dose and if he should get it once or twice a day.

What is your vet recommending for Paco now? Is he having more tests to see how it's going? How is he doing?

Hi Gail,
I have that Dr. Dodd attachment in my dog files from when Paco was diagnosed with Lupus.  I have been cooking white fish, potato, sweet potato, green beans, carrots, fresh garlic and fresh parsley for him for about a month for the liver cleanse diet.  Initially, he gobbled up the small meals, but now is not as thrilled.  I am giving a little hard boiled egg and/or cottage cheese trying to give some variety.  He has not vomited in over a month which is good.  I just need to get some guidance on how much Milk Thistle and how often and any other suggestions for diet.  Have a call into the vet, but we ave been missing one another and he is not in today.

Hi Cherryl

The dose for Milk Thistle is:

The Veterinarian's Guide to Natural Remedies by Martin Zucker:

250 - 500 mg twice  a day for dogs depending on size and severity of the condition.

How about adding SAMe too?

Paco weighs 18 lbs.  The capsules are 175 mg.  should I give one in am and one in pm, before or after meals?  What does SAMe do?

Jo,

Just spoke to vet and he said to use the Milk Thistle twice a day and that the SAMe would also be god to give him.  Any help you can provide with dose would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Paco no longer interested in eating and vomited breakfast.  Not sure what to do.  Waiting to hear from vet.

Sorry to read this Cherryl. Has the vet offered to take the gall bladder out?
Hope things turn around soon.

I doubt if he is a candidate for surgery.  Since my last post, I have consulted with a homeopathic ve a few hours from us.  Traveled there yesterday with Paco.  She said he was close to liver failure 5 weeks ago with his enzymes.  She has put him on Milk Thistle twice a day along with Pepcid AC both an hour prior to meals.  He is also on a supplement called Standard Process K9 Hepatic Support to help the liver heal, Klaire Probiotic Compete Powder and Metoclopramide for vomiting.  Tomorrow she will consult with local vet and possibly putting him on Ursodial.  He is being fed three times a day small meals of white fish or boiled chicken, sweet potato and white rice.  So far he is eating and barking for meals.  Time will tell if the liver will heal and the sludge will move out.

Good luck with Paco, Cherryl. It's so hard when they are older and things start to fail. I sure hope he pulls out of this and has more years left with you. He has been such a great success in this group. Lola was too. It's sad that something hereditary got her, at a young age :( I believe she had a total remission of her SLE too.

Hugs to you and Paco the Precious One.
