My friend's Golden Boy has today been diagnosed with SRMA. He is Chad's first cousin once removed (I think!), Chad's mum and Dex's grandmother were litter sisters. I'm gobsmacked, just 2 dogs in the entire line, which has been going 40+(?) years, and they live within a couple of miles of one another. I sometimes think these dogs are sent to us to take care of...

Anyhow, I'm sure she is going to join the group, but maybe not today, Dex is still in the vet hospital recovering from the GA and spinal tap. They've started him on steroids, he should be home tomorrow. The good news is Dex's vet is a good friend of my vet who treated Chad, I am sure they will compare notes!

All paws crossed, I am sure he will be fine, this is only his 2nd episode and he already has a definitive diagnosis and treatment which is good news.

Sounds good taht the vets know each other - sharing knowledge can only be a good thing.  Look forward to your friend joining and hope that all's well post-procedure.

Thanks Penel, Dex is home, he was very drowsy when he got home but they'd given him dexamethsone this morning and is probably still getting over the GA. I'm going to visit him either tomorrow or Friday when he's up to receiving visitors... I won't take the boys though!

Really hope he's feeling better soon and that the steroids get to work quickly.

I went to see Dex today, he was still uncomfortable but moving a little better. We lifted him onto the settee and he laid with his head in my lap and had a snooze for an hour or so... bless  :)
He has his follow-up tomorrow, see what the vet thinks, but I think he's doing okay, it's going to he a few days before he really picks up. He's on 55mg bid of pred, which is good for the initial dose.
All paws still crossed...

Hi Chris

It is very painful to start with but I do hope the preds will kick in soon - perhaps tomorrow.  How much does he weigh?  Is he on a high pred dose Chris or is 55mg bid ok for his weight?

goldiepower

Hi Jo,
He's around 28kg, so 55mg is about 2 mg/kg for his weight, that's the same starting dose Chad was on all those years ago! He is so like Chad it is untrue, same looks, same size, same temperament... and same illness at the same age, poor boy. I just hope he responds as well as the old boy did!

He looks like a patchwork quilt where they shaved him for the spinal and joint taps. They took one from his lower back as well as c-spine and his elbows (just in case it wasn't SRMA I guess). He has some Tramadol if he needs it, and Ros has bought him a greyhound coat that will keep his neck warm (huge bald patch!) when he's up to short walks. She was going to get him a harness too so he doesn't have anything pulling on his neck.

He is such a sweetheart, it brought back so many memories, sitting there cuddling him... and a very real reminder of what I went through with Chad and what others are going through right now.

The memories never go away do they Chris?  Still the prognosis is excellent and there is no reason why he won't do as well as Chad.  It's just getting him there and the stress and strains that go with it!  It's good she has you for support.

He should be feeling much better soon.

You are so right Jo, they don't, and we re-live them each time another dog has the same problem.

Dex is feeling much better today, I haven't seen him but had 2 reports about his unruly behaviour  ;D That's my boy!!! He's stretching and scratching and wanting to play, I am SOOOOO happy!!!

The naughty boys have training tomorrow, but I hope to be able to see Dex late afternoon when we get back, I need to see him for myself, he was so poorly last time I saw him, I need to see him being naughty ;)

Preds are amazing!  You will have a good time seeing Dex tomorrow.  It's great news.
