Hi Everyone

I just thought I would let you know about this seminar. I know it says it is for beardies but you don't have to be a member of the breed clubs and it might be of interest to anyone who breeds or who wants to breed.  Lorna Kennedy is doing really good work at Manchester University.  Lorna and Tom are not breed people.

BEARDED COLLIE BREED CLUBS
BREEDING FOR HEALTH SEMINAR
This Seminar should appeal to anyone interested in the
long-term health and wellbeing of the Bearded Collie
to be held on
SUNDAY 21st OCTOBER 2012
at Brownshore Community Centre, Hobnock Road, Essington, WV11 2RF
Speakers are:
Elizabeth Aughey BVMS MRCVS (Aughenaird Bearded Collies)
Sharing her knowledge of the development of the egg and spermand the special method used to scramble the
genes to provide genetic diversity
Dr. Lorna Kennedy, Senior Scientist,
Centre for Integrated Genomic Medical Research, University of Manchester
Different breeds of dog have varying susceptibility to particular diseases. Although genetic tests have been
developed for many single gene disorders where the causative gene has been identified, it is much more
difficult to identify the genetic markers for complex immune mediated diseases where many genes are
involved in the development of the disease. Lorna's group is working in this area and have identified
markers for several immune mediated diseases in dogs. She will present their latest research findings,
discussing how the information could be used in the future and also talk about her work on the Major
Histocompatability Complex (MHC), a group of genes central to the control of the immune response in all
mammals. Using MHC data from Beardies in the UK and Finland she will discuss their MHC diversity
compared to other breeds of dog.
Dr. Tom Lewis - Post-doctoral Quantitative Geneticist from the Animal Health Trust
Providing some background science to inbreeding and estimated breeding values, effective breeding
population and detailed results of the population analysis for Bearded Collies and the development of the
Kennel Club's online service – 'Mate Select'
Although this may all sound a little complicated, our speakers will do their utmost
to convey their knowledge to our varied audience
