The boys have been suffering with runny eyes for several weeks. The treatment has had little effect and we seem to be back to square one. there is nothing obvious and Sydney is absolutely fine, so they are at the vet today having a throrough examination under anaesthetic. Paws crossed for them...

No, I don't think they do have allergies. We tried them on antihistamines for several weeks but that made no difference.

The vet has done swabs for culture from both of them, but at the moment is leaning towards it being a quirk in the shape of their eyes. It looks like they both have a tiny fold in the lower lid which may divert the tears down the face instead of draining them. We looked at the shape of Syd's eyes and he doesn't have that.

It really is odd! But if the cultures come back clear then I think it is something we need to live with. It doesn't worry either of them, it just looks awful having tear stains, especially William as he is "blonde", Ed is dark gold.

There is an eye specialist locally so I may have them referred to him... our vet is going to send him some photos to see what he thinks.

Hi Chris

Good luck with the boys.  Good idea to send the specialist the pics.

My mom's chihuahua has the tear stained face. Seems it is fairly common in smaller breeds. Not so common in yours though.

Well it's been a while, and in spite of treatment their eyes were still running. Last week they saw the opthalmic specialist and yesterday he admitted them to do a nasolacrimal flush. He also took swabs from both boys and a corneal biopsy from Ed. Ed also had the entry holes to the tear ducts made larger as they were smaller than would be expected for a dog his size.

Now we have 10 days of Maxitrol eye drops and wait for the test results and see if the flush has done the trick...

Paws crossed!

I hope that helps with their eyes. You certainly are doing all you can for them.

GOOD luck with the boys Chris.
I really do think the opthalmic specialist  opinion  would be your best bet.

Thanks all! Their eyes still seem to be running but I'm putting drops in 4 times a day, which may be what's causing it. The specialist said he was not concerned about them as there is no evidence of anything wrong, it just looks awful!

On another note, my friend's new puppy is Sydney's half brother, Ed and Will's cousin, he's gorgeous, spitting image of the wonderful Chad! She is having a hip replacement on 10 Sept so he's coming to stay with me for a few weeks. What do you think the chances are of her getting him back?? LOL!

In spite of multiple different treatments, the boys have still got runny eyes. We're assuming now it's an allergy, but no idea what. Even though Edward's eyes run much more than William's, Will's seem to be very sore. I took this pic today, if anyone has any ideas I would be VERY grateful. I'm going to take him to the vet this week, hopefully tomorrow, and will email the pic in advance to him

Did they both start having runny eyes round about the same time, Chris? I think really you must be looking at an allergy for both of them to get the same symptoms. Even then dogs in the same household do not always get the problems together so my guess would be that it must be something in the home or garden that they are having regular contact with. Are they rubbing their eyes on the ground?

It is very frustrating not knowing what it is but to try and rule out the home etc. you do really need to try and think of anything different that has come into the home or happened prior to the watery eyes. Nowadays they make carpets with stain resistance already in them, is one example. I like to have the option of what chemicals to bring into the home but it is becoming more difficult to keep things clean but the chemicals away.

Is it possible to take them away from the home (for a holiday say) to see if things improve? I would stop the drops as sometimes they can make things worse.

Hope you get some answers soon and their eyes get better.

Ed started first then Will started a few weeks later. Some days are better than others, they are both fine at night and first thing in the morning which makes me think it must be something in the garden... but no idea what!

That is a good idea, taking them on holiday, I will see if I can get them to the beach see if that helps.

Thank you!

Are they fed on the same foods?

do you use plastic bowls, or metal / ceramic bowls?

I'm not sure whereabouts you are Chris, but I'd try and see a holistic vet, they approach things very differently to conventional vets.

Yes, they boths have Natural Instinct Working Dog Turkey from plastic bowls (as does Sydney who is fine).

I am in West Yorkshire, I have an idea there is a holistic vet in Wetherby... I'll try Google and see what I can find...

Thank you!
