Hello Jo, Matt and Rusty

So sorry to hear Rusty has SRMA. The good news about this AI problem is that it does exactly what the same suggests, it responds to steroids! Hoe much does Rusty weigh and what dose of steroids is he on/has he been on? As you know, it is important to get the right dose and to reduce slowly to try to avoid a relapse. Many dogs with SRMA DO replapse, though, and it is not unheard of for a dog to be on a low maintenance dose for many years.

My own precious Golden Retriever, Chad, got SRMA when he was 9 months old. He responded well to steroids, but each time we tried to wean him off them he relapsed, so we took the decision to keep him on a low dose (5mg eod) permanently. He lived a very normal and happy life until I lost him at the grand age of 12 years and 5 months.

All paws crossed for Rusty. If you want more information/experiences I'm happy to talk about Chad ad nauseam, as the others know  ;D
There are several SRMA mums and dads on this forum, I am sure the others will weigh in too!

Personally, I would have the antibody titres checked to see if Dex has antibodies to the core vaccines.  If he does then there is aboslutely no need to vaccinate again.

Hi Ros

Chad had antibody titres done to help the decision process, if I recall correctly, he had a booster when he was about 5 or 6 and it was the only one he ever needed.

Paws crossed for the gorgeous Dex

Meg's results came back today and her red blood count had risen from 18 to 29! We are so thrilled. Additionally, her white blood cell count has reduced significantly and is now in normal range and her bone marrow has finally begun producing new red blood cells.

Aw, that's GREAT news!!! Well done Meg  ;D

[That is so lovely to read.  We all look forward to the time when they are bonkers again.

I can vouch for it! He was so funny at gundog training this morning, he broke his stays to come to the other end of the field to see my Billy and later he broke another lot of stays to come for a cuddle with his favourite Auntie while I was clearing away the poo bags  ;D

Okay, so we take them to training and expect them to learn to behave, but when a dog has been so sick it is wonderful to see them being naughty like that  ;)

He's quite bonkers now, if he gets any more bonkers I'm going to need spikes in my boots to stop him from pulling me over!!!!

I'll have him!!!  ;D

Hello Joy, sorry to hear about your Irish girl.

You are so right to push the thyroid testing, it is in the breed and it can cause seizures. As Gail said, you need a full thyroid panel, many labs will just check the T4 but you need the full panel for a diagnosis. If you can get a copy of the results that would be really helpful. The diagnosis can too frequently come back as "normal" just because the T4 is within the reference range, but the lower half of the ref range is definitely not normal!

All paws crossed, let us know how she gets on.

Can anyone help please for a dry nose ointment?

My rescue boy had a dry cracked nose when he came to me 3 weeks ago, I've been putting vaseline on it just before his meals so he's less likely to lick it off. It has made a huge difference. I have also been adding salmon oil to his food and his coat is now starting to shine and he has stopped itching.

He is not an AI dog, but he did have the dull dry coat and dry cracked nose, so thought it would be worth a mention!
