We took Eubie to different vet who did another blood test, paying special attention to clumping. This time it came back at 149, which is at the low end for most dogs, but okay (i'm pretty sure) for whippets. She wants us to come back in a month for another test, if the reading is good they will neuter him then. I'm feeling relieved by this news.

Thank you so much Jo. All of the info you shared is very helpful. We are not adverse to seeing a different vet, and the breeder we got Eubie from sent me a few in the LA area that a whippet forum she belongs to says are more knowledgable with the breed. I think that is our next step. I will print up the info you shared to take with us.

When we lost Patch I asked the few breeders that I knew about IMTP and none of them believed it was common among whippets. Eventually I found one mention on an AKC page. So I don't know if it is less common here then in the UK or if breeders just didn't want to admit to it. I have a feeling they are far less common as a breed in general in the US.

As of now Eubie shows no signs of bruising or bleeding so we will go to the vet with more whippet familiarity and move on from there.

Thank you so much for your help,
Sherrell  (Huey was my first whippet)

Hi, I'm a new member. I live in Los Angeles, and learned about your forum on FB. Last February we lost our 8 year old whippet to Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia. My niece was visiting over the weekend and Patch was playing with Easy our 13 year old whippet and having a great time. We noticed that he was limping a bit so as soon as our niece left we took him to the vet. They told us what he had, kept him for the day (I can't say exactly what treatment he was given) and sent him to spend the night with us. The next morning he was in such bad shape that we had to put him down. Needless to say the entire family was devastated, we had never even heard of this disease, and lost our beautiful, goofy boy in a matter of days.

A few months later we got Eubie from a different whippet breeder, he was about 4 months old. Easy, our older whippet was pretty depressed and we have always liked having two dogs. We took Eubie in to get him neutered the other day and the vet told us that he had low platelets and they wouldn't do the operation. Needless to say we are a bit freaked out. We are trying to find a different vet who has more whippet, low platelet experience, and have a couple of leads. His platelet count was done twice. The first count was 139, the second was 117. His LYM was 0.95, and his GLOB was 2.0. Everything else was normal. They did a canine Tick Borne panel which came back negative.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thank you.
