Hello Ralph's mum,

I'm sorry, so sorry....it's so hard to stop if they are bleeding internally.

I also had Pru for 10 years adopting her at 5, the vet told me I'd have her for such a short time realistically.

We do are best for them but in the end we have to let them go however that way maybe.

Sending you a big hug.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts.

One of the biggest things for me whilst on the auto immune journey with Prunella was that she kept on pulling through, even when after 11 days in hospital once and 2 blood transfusions later she still pulled through.....on this occasion on the 9th day the vet called to say that in desperately trying to save her life they were causing her other problems (all veins had collapsed and due to the thrombocytopenia all were haemorrhaging when they were trying to get needles in to give second transfusion).

She was not only at deaths door, she was 3/4 of the way through it but still came back.

She was a tower of strength and so very strong.

If there is life then there is hope.

I just wanted to say that the AI journey is long, hard and bloody painful at times....but Pru was living proof that lots of dogs can pull through and survive.

Thank you Jo,

She was the best dog I've ever had...the vet sent me a card saying she had "Celebrity status" there.

I don't think I went a month without her being a visitor at the vets with one thing and another but by goodness she beat the darn Aiha and for that I'm really happy.

Thank you for everything Jo and all the support I have received over the years from others living with a dog with an ai illness.

Much love xx

Hello everybody,

I'm posting this in the Aiha section regarding Prunella my beautiful American cocker spaniel..please do move it if needed.

Most of you would remember Prunella and her long history of contracting Aiha and thrombocytopenia when she was 5, she had many relapse and transfusions but always pulled through by having wonderful vets.

It is with a very heavy heart and great sadness that last week aged 2 months short of 15 I took the decision to have her put to sleep, she had glaucoma and had both eyes removed about 3 months ago but she just couldn't cope, she was nearly totally deaf and in the end the vet thought she was possibly senile too....physically she was fantastic but around the house she struggled, crashing into everything (id bubbled wrapped nearly everything at her level) she couldn't seem to walk in a straight line and I thought if I had a realative that was blind, deaf and senile I'd only wish one thing for them....I made that decision and the vet came to the cottage, she passed in my arms very peacefully.

I have always said that as long as she didn't pass with something auto immune related that meant that she'd survived it and with that I'm so very happy.

Without this forum over the years and many calls at strange hours to Jo for support and advice in Prus times of crisis I really don't know what I'd have done.

Thank you to everyone that has supported me throughout her illness, I miss her so much and the pain I feel is unbearable but she will never be forgotten.

Hi all,

I've only just come across this post so unsure really what it's all about...however, I'm in a Sussex if you need any help, have a super vet and also have just recently had Prunella at Optivet in Havant so can also praise them highly although didn't see Kit.

Hello Amy,

I'm sorry that you feel you wanted to leave the forum regarding lack of response.

I can only think that people couldn't relate to the type of autoimmune illness that your dog suffered from.

There are many autoimmune type illnesses and if people haven't heard of it then maybe that's why no one other than Jo replied.

This forum was an absolute lifeline to me when my dog was suffering from Auto immune haemolytic anaemia,I don't know what I'd have done without the support and I'm sorry that you felt that you haven't had the support that I have found.

Best wishes to you

Annee

I've insured Ocean with Animal Friends.....very good and I like that a percentage of your money goes to various animal charities.

Hi Elisabeth,

I too have you and your family in my thoughts.

I'm glad to hear that you are not amongst it all and have distance between you.

Let's hope there is a new government in place very soon and the hatred dies down without more loss of life.

Hugs to you all

Hi,

Her nose doesn't run exactly with blood it just gets clogged up, I clean it then the next day it appears blocked again.

The vet did all X-rays needed and couldn't see anything on them, the nose problem came after her accident with the eye so the nose wasn't the cause.

There obviously is something going on but what exactly is the million dollar question.

An X-ray would show any tumour I'm sure and he didn't see anything and her bloods are fine.

I guess I'll just have to wait until Thursday to see if anything showed up on the swab that was taken.

I remember all the problems with Lola, I am thankful Pru's does t seem anyway near as bad as that...poor little Lola.

She sneezes a lot in the morning which I find a bit odd too.

Jan, I hope all goes well....you won't know yourself, I am so very busy but will certainly pop in if I have the time :)

Thank you all.

Hello Jan,

Lovely to hear from you too, I'm glad all seems well with you :)

A quick update on Prunella..

...she is coping remarkedly well with only one eye bumping into things once in a while but nothing too problematic, she had her stitches out last week and she's healed brilliantly.

We do have one other problem which is causing some concern.

4 days after having her eye removed she started sneezing a lot..maybe ten times in one go, also the left side of her nose appeared to be blocked with dried blood which she would sneeze out, the vet didn't think it was related to her eye even though it is the same side.

I would pick the dry from her nose but within another day it would become blocked again, so last Wednesday she was back to the vet who said that he didn't think it was an infection has she had been on antibiotics for her eye, We discussed having a tube put up her nose with a camera so he could look around internally and also x-ray her nose, so thats what we did last Thursday, he flushed her nose internally and noticed that there was a lots of mucus and blood, he  thought that there was something going on but didnt know what, he couldn't actually find anything like a grass seed etc.

So she is now on a weeks course of another antibiotic to see if that works but four days on she has started to sneeze again and her nose is blocked once again.

She is certainly not sneezing as bad as she was but it seems to be getting worse once again, She is more than happy in herself but I obviously want to find out one way or another what is going on, the healthy side of her nose is very moist but the one side is dry and crusty.

She doesn't seem to be having difficulty breathing, she has had blood tests and all is well in that dept.

Her vet took a sample from her nose which we will hopefully get the results from later this week, failing that is the next option would be for her to have a Ct scan to find out what's going on.

I feel that at her age, nearly 13 I have to do take all options that are open to me, she has been through so much in her life time that if I didn't do anything to try and rectify that problem and I lost her then I would never forgive myself if it was something that I could have helped prevent.

I would very much welcome anybody's  experience or views on what may be going on with Prunella.

Love Annee xx

Thank you Jo...Thank you Gail,

She had a restful night and today you wouldn't think anything had happened to her, she hated the cone that she came out the vets with so I found a shop that sold foam ones so she's happier with that.

It is truly amazing how they cope, if it were a human having had their eye removed we would be acting "normal" for quite some time, probably laying in bed for a few days etc.

I took her and Ocean for a walk around the park earlier, Pru on the lead which she wasn't happy about but think she was just glad to be out in the fresh air.

She has to go back for a check up on Monday, the eye socket is very swollen, almost like a golf ball but this is very common, she has no oozing and it's a very neat wound.

All in all I'm very pleased that the decision was made quickly to remove her eye, I'm pleased that I won't be asking myself everyday "is she in pain"

Thank you all for your wishes, will keep you all updated.

Annee, Prunella and Ocean xx

Thank you Jo,

She is such a wonderful dog and she has such a fabulous vet, he will do all the appropriate blood checks etc before he carries out the op.

I will let you know when she's home x
