Thanks Jo.  This is very helpful and along the same lines with what I was thinking as my next steps after every 3rd day.  Currently he is on every 3rd day.  It has been one week.  Keeping our fingers crossed.
Throughout this period, would you get lab work, such as CBC to watch the WBC?  For Wiggles, relapse has been one of 2 things - seizure like activity which thankfully we have not had for a while, OR digestive issues (diarrhea/vomiting).  We did one time had IMHA - but again, thankfully his HCT / HGB have been stable.

Thanks again.

Hello
I wasn't sure under which topic to post under so apologize in advance.
Our boy Wiggles was on Prednisone 1.25 mg every other day, diabetic and has occasional IBD flare ups.  We got down and stayed at Pred 1.25 mg for a month, was doing really well and I was going to taper to every 3rd day and he had an IBD flare up - vomiting, diarrhea.  Did not get hospitalized and recovered pretty quickly.
I went back up to Prednisone 1.25 mg alternating every other day 2.5 mg for one month and then taper the 2.5 mg to 1.25 mg every other.  Stayed on this for another 21 days.
I started this week to go every 3rd day .. with 1.25 mg.  My question is .. is this the proper tapering .. I have heard of others going 1.25 mg every other day X2, then skip the third ...

Thanks for your help

Thanks Jo.
Wiggles is off of his Phenobarb since January - the sentence is supposed to say "now completely off" instead of "not".
I just did visit the vaccination web site.  We have not gotten any vaccines since last February.  I am pretty amazed that after recovery from his first bout of AI, his neurologist told us that it was ok to get vaccines.
Thank you for your insights regarding leukocytosis - I have been a bit nervous about that and I feel that some vets do not understand the connection between that and the AI.
He is clinically normal and stable for a couple of months so your insights have given me some comfort.

Thanks again.

Thank you for adding us.
Wiggles is a 10-yr male Lhasa Apso.  Wiggles has been a healthy, active little dog with occasional digestive and bowel issues (loose stools, diarrhea etc..) until about 2 years ago when we noticed his bark growing weak.  Towards the end of the week, his energy was low so we took him to the ER.  At the ER, diagnosed with pneumonia and while waiting for medications, we noticed he was having some lameness on the right hind legs - very brief and very intermittent.  The next morning, both hind legs were lame.  We took him back to the ER - they thought he had a dislocated disc.  By early next morning, his bark was gone and we started our journey into autoimmune ups and downs.  We were transferred and referred to a neurologist.  Wiggles illness progressed to severe tetra paresis.  They did all kinds of test and concluded that it is idiopathic immune mediated.  He was placed on Prednisone and Atopica to suppress his immune system.  He regained mobility after a series of PT sessions.  Attempts to taper the Prednisone was unsuccessful.  He had bouts of IBD, IMHA (one time) that required a blood transfusion.  He also developed Jacksonian like epilepsy with Prednisone tapering attempts.  The seizures were intermittent - last year he did go through multiple seizures and was put on Phenobarb.
At this time, we decided to seek homeopathy treatment and were connected with a holistic vet in Miami, FL.  He was started on Phosphorus LM remedy and slowly weaning off Phenobarb.  We are not completely off of Phenobarb but early this year, developed diabetes due to several pancreatitis episodes.  Our vet thinks his condition is a result of over-vaccination, specifically Rabies.
He is on Vetsulin and is regulated after 5 months.  He is currently on 2.5 mg Pred every other day and we want to start weaning again - slowly.
He has leukocytosis, thrombocytosis and increased neutrophils but HCT and HGB are stable.  These could be due to long term Prednisone
use.
Wiggles is a very spoiled little pup, very much loved.  We want him to stay stable ... he's been through a lot as you can see.
