Hi
I have been in communication with Janelle Belanger who is a Staff Research Associate with CGAP researching Addison's disease at UC Davis. The study is still wanting samples not only from affected Addison's dogs but also from any non-affected standard poodles over the age of 7.

I am including part of one of her emails to me below for information.

***********We continue to collect samples from Standard Poodles. Specifically, we are looking for dogs with ACTH diagnosed Addison's and healthy dogs over 7 years old. We still take buccal samples, but prefer blood samples if possible. All of the instructions are on our website at (http://cgap.ucdavis.edu/CGAPAddisonsBloodCollectionForm.pdf)

Our poodle database is extensive but we do not receive health updates from owners so we are unsure if the dog remained or remains healthy or not. If you could encourage owners to update dogs who they have previously submitted, that would be great. It is best to use our on-line form http://cgap.ucdavis.edu/healthupdateform.htm rather than e-mail the updates. ********

Please take the time to submit samples if you haven't already done so and also to update your details if you haven't already. Those of you with standards over the age of 7  not affected by Addison's please try to help here too. The results of this research could potentially affect all of us standard poodles lovers.

I submitted samples from my dogs back in 2001 and have just sent in updates on them. The more dogs that take part the better. I have heard that there may be some research beginning soon for labradoodles also so as soon as I hear anything I will report back on that too.

Thanks for your time

Hi Pam,  the beardie world have also sent many samples to Janelle.

Did you know that Manchester University CIGMR, are also collecting Samples from Addisonian dogs and also many other inherited diseases.   They collect samples by Oragene sponge swabs.  If you know of anyone who can provide samples and hasn't yet done so then please let me know and I will give you a contact.

Below is an extract from the Great Dane Health Group:

The Universities of Manchester and Liverpool are collaborating in a study which aims to identify genes which increase the risk of developing hypoadrenocorticism. For this study we require the collection of a saliva sample from dogs which have been confirmed by a veterinarian as having hypoadrenocorticism.

Saliva will be collected (by the owner) on small absorbent sponges which are placed underneath the tongue of the dog. Each sample kit contains two sponges which will soak up saliva from a single dog.

The sponges are placed in a collection tube which contains a solution to preserve DNA.
We require each owner to complete a consent form and a short questionnaire for each dog and return them with the collection vial to the University of Manchester.

We need to collect saliva samples from as many AFFECTED dogs as possible which have been diagnosed by a veterinarian surgeon as having Hypoadrenocorticism  (these dogs can be of any age).

These samples will be used to find genetic differences between the dogs with and without the disease.
All information provided will be confidential.
We have already collected a number of samples for this study through our links with the UK veterinary schools. We are not collecting samples from dogs which do not have hypoadrenocorticism at this point in time.

If you would like to submit a sample for study, requests for a kit should be made to:

Thanks for this Jo.

Do you know if they are able to take samples from dogs outside the UK ?

Although I haven't got my Addison's boy any more, I will share this info with as many people as I can and also pass it on to my vets as they have over a dozen Addison's patients now.
