Hi all, between Joanne and others we presumptively diagnosed my Potty with SLO nearly 6 mths ago. She's been on the doxy/niacin etc regimen for 5.5 mths now. She has never lost any nails or had any bleeds because we caught it so early but I'd like to know from others what should her nails look like if she's in remission? Do any of you have any pics of what your dogs nails like when in remission? I tried to upload 2 pics but I could not.

Hi

I am sorry that you can't upload any pictures.  The site may need updating.

If your dog's nails are not causing any problems, such as breaking off or bleeding and causing pain then, after nearly 6 months of treatment, you can assume that remission has been reached.  The visual appearance of the nails differs from dog to dog depending on the amount of damage that was done at the nail bed in the first few months.  Some nails grow back deformed but are still functional, others look normal and as long as the dog stays in remission they should continue to look that way.

If you want to send the pics to me then you can send them to my email addy: cimda@aslog.co.uk

Once in remission, the dose of doxy should be reduced over a period of months to either a low maintenance dose or, as is more typical, withdrawn altogether.  Then you can start to reduce the other meds/supplements to a low maintenance dose.

Well done.
Jo
